Can't connect to 192.168.1.190

Post by mottosso »

Hi,

I'm in the process of evaluating NIM, but ran into trouble at the end of the first video tutorial[1] and couldn't connect to the server running in VirtualBox.

I suspect it is due to the bridged connection and the fact that I'm on a wireless connection, the router might not recognise the address. So I tried a host-only connection, but without success.

Any ideas?

Hi,

The issue might be that your IP range of your (assuming) laptop is different than the one assigned to NIM. If your computer is using an IP in the range of 192.168.1.xxx then NIM would need to be configured to use the same IP range.

For example:
laptop host: 192.168.1.10
NIM: 192.168.1.11

or
laptop host: 10.10.1.20
NIM: 10.10.1.21

It shouldn't matter that you are on a wireless connection, although we have noticed some issues in some instances with low DHCP renew times on host machines. The other network options in VirtualBox can be explored but have their own implications. Bridged is the preferred method and allows the VM to have it's own address and ports without needing to forward ports from the host.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the reply.

I am using an IP in the same range, my laptop having 192.168.1.7. Any other tips?

Hi,

If your network settings are correct then I don't immediately see why you would have an issue using the bridged adapter. Can you ping the NIM address from the .7 machine? I'm curious if it's a network issue or if it's issue with the NIM webserver.

We may want to remote in and take a look to help trouble shoot.

Would you be using IPv6 by any chance on OSX or Linux? I just reread the VirtualBox docs and found this...

https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch06. ... rk_bridged
On Macintosh hosts, functionality is limited when using AirPort (the Mac's wireless networking) for bridged networking. Currently, VirtualBox supports only IPv4 over AirPort. For other protocols such as IPv6 and IPX, you must choose a wired interface.

On Linux hosts, functionality is limited when using wireless interfaces for bridged networking. Currently, VirtualBox supports only IPv4 over wireless. For other protocols such as IPv6 and IPX, you must choose a wired interface.

Thanks for getting back, Andrew.

My window for evaluating NIM has closed for now, but when I get another chance I'll have another look. As far as I can tell, things look correct, and I'm using plain IPv4 on a Windows host.

Thanks for now!
